Step 3 of 12

Turn my life over to the Holy Spirit.

Step 3 is the turning point. You must decide who is in control. Up to this point, you have been running your life. Even when things looked outwardly fine, the pattern was the same; you made the decisions, you followed your instincts, you trusted your own judgment above all else. And where has that led? Back to the same attachments. The same cycles. The same patterns you cannot break on your own. This step is not about improvement. It is about surrender.

To turn your life over to the Holy Spirit means you no longer place yourself at the center. You stop acting as your own authority. You stop trusting every impulse, every thought, every emotional reaction as if it were true. Because it isn’t. You are capable of deceiving yourself. That is now established.

The Holy Spirit is not an abstract force. He is a Person. He teaches, guides, corrects, and directs. And He most often speaks through ordinary means: through Scripture, through the teachings of the Church, and through other people.

God speaks through people. That means you must learn how to listen. Not selectively. Not only when you agree. But especially when you don’t. If someone who loves you speaks truth into your life, pay attention. If a faithful Catholic corrects you, pay attention. If the Church teaches something that challenges you, pay attention. The Holy Spirit is not obligated to agree with you. He is there to lead you. This requires humility. Real humility. Not the appearance of it.

It means admitting that your current way of thinking is not sufficient. That your instincts, left unchecked, will lead you back into the same patterns you are trying to escape. You cannot follow your impulses and follow the Holy Spirit at the same time. At some point, you will have to choose. Turning your life over is not a one-time event. It is a daily decision. Sometimes it is made in peace. Often it is made in tension. You will feel the pull to go your own way. To trust your own reasoning. To return to what is familiar. And in that moment, you must decide: Will I follow myself? Or will I follow God?

This is where real change begins. Not when you understand everything. Not when you feel ready. But when you begin to act differently. When you pause before reacting. When you seek counsel instead of isolating. When you obey even when it is uncomfortable. These are the signs that you are no longer in control. And that is a good thing. You are not losing your life. You are placing it into the hands of Someone who knows what to do with it.

Turn your life over to the Holy Spirit.

1. In what areas of my life am I still trying to stay in control?

2. What decisions do I consistently make without seeking guidance from God or others?

3. When was the last time I followed my own instincts and it led me back into an old pattern?

4. Do I trust my own judgment more than I trust God’s direction? Be honest.

5. How do I typically respond when someone corrects me? Do I resist, justify, or listen?

6. Who in my life can I trust to speak truth to me; even when it’s uncomfortable?

7. Do I actually believe that God can speak through other people?

8. When I feel a strong impulse, do I question it; or immediately act on it?

9. What would it look like, practically, to “pause” before making decisions this week?

10. Am I willing to follow God’s direction even when it contradicts what I want?

11. What is one specific area of my life that I need to surrender right now?

12. Can I say, and mean it: I turn my life over to the Holy Spirit.
