The Catholic Steps

Sponsorship

Sponsorship should be done in the real world. Not online. Look for someone who first and foremost, is a practicing Catholic. After that qualifier is met, look for someone who has what you want. Joyful, a servant's heart, spiritually rich, even materially rich. Being materially rich is not a bad thing. In fact, it is often a good sign that this person is probably disciplined with their finances. That might be the mentor relationship that you're looking for. A word of caution however, materially rich is not the same as spiritually rich. If a person is not spiritually rich, it doesn't matter if they're materially rich or not. We suggest politely avoiding sponsorship with them.

Here are some signs of spiritual riches:

  • Receives the Eucharist often. Attends Sunday Mass routinely and also attends daily Masses.
  • Doesn't put others down in order to build themselves up.
  • Isn't constantly power seeking by bragging.

Once you find this person, courage is required. Approach them and be direct. Because the Catholic Steps program is new, they may not be aware of its existence.

Here's an approach:

"Hello, my name is X and I was hoping you might prayerfully consider being my sponsor. I found these Catholic Steps online and I need a sponsor to take them with."

They'll more than likely ask you what the Steps are. Show them the website. If they say yes, great. If they say no, move on and find someone else. Don't take it personally. Courage is the virtue from which all others flow.

"Be not afraid!"
